Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) and Integrated Business Planning (IBP) have undeniably made a great contribution to improving the professionalization of inventory management. However, these concepts are focused specifically on the last stock echelon of the end product. The inventory planning of the upstream stock in raw materials and semi-finished products is often regarded simply as a derivative of the end product. Therefore, the future development of S&OP and IBP will have to primarily focus on synchronized, integral inventory optimization across all echelons of the supply chain: ‘collaborative planning’.
