Food retailers opt for automation

In quick succession, five different Dutch supermarket chains have recently decided to partly or fully automate their distribution centers. At Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Plus, Hoogvliet and Spar, activities that up until now have been performed by hundreds of order pickers will soon be taken care of by a complex system of robots and conveyors. Why are food retailers suddenly so interested in automation? In an article in Warehouse Totaal, Groenewout’s expert Arthur Zondervan weighs up the pros and cons.
