Summary IT systems are continuously improving, leading to more and more possibilities. However, not all possibilities are evenly important for all industries. Where in the Food industry with short shelf lives, e.g. cross-docking is an important requirement, it is far less relevant in an environment where household appliances are shipped from the Far East. With increasing IT capabilities it becomes the challenge to only use those capabilities that support your optimal logistics concept and not let the IT capabilities determine this concept. The latter approach will increase handling costs unnecessarily. This effect became very clear during the e-commerce hype. For many companies e-commerce had very limited market potential, but the effect on increased material handling costs was substantial.
This presentation on Pragmatic Material handling gives insight in differences in requirements in different branches and how handling optimization can be approached in the Retail chain.
